I’m Heather.
I'm an equestrian photographer located in Charleston, SC… but honestly, I’m just a horse girl who happens to be really good with a camera. ( I am an equine Photographer based in Charleston. I also serve Tryon, NC and Jacksonville, Ocala, and Wellington, FL; and . Heather Johnson Photo my website is www.schorsephotographer.com
Horses have been part of my heart forever. When I’m not photographing clients, I’m at the barn with my own horse, Gatsby — probably brushing him longer than necessary or standing there talking to him like he’s going to answer back. (You do it too. Don’t lie.)
I understand the early morning 6am feedings. The pre-show nerves. The smell of leather, the quiet moments, pulling & braiding manes, and fly spray that somehow never leaves your car. The way your whole day can turn around after one good ride. And the way your horse feels like home.
I spend my days chasing good light, fixing flyaway manes & braids, and occasionally making weird noises to get your horse’s ears up. It’s a skill set. I am located in Charleston, SC; but I also serve Georgetown, Camden, Aiken, Upstate SC and also Tryon, NC & Greenville, SC; and areas of coastal SC; Beaufort, Bluffton & Savannah, GA. In the winter months; I also do Beach Portraits in Huntington Island near beaufort, Myrtle beach State Park, and Anastasia State Park and Princess Cove in St. Augustine Florida.
Horses have had my heart forever. When I’m not photographing clients, I’m at the barn with my own horse, Gatsby. So yes — I understand the early mornings, the smell of leather, the emotional attachment to a 1,200-pound animal, and the way your entire mood depends on how your ride went.
I get it because I live it.
My photography style? Think timeless, a little dramatic, cinematic, a little romantic — but never stiff. I love a bold black background portrait just as much as I love golden hour in a field where everything feels soft and glowy. Whether you’re a dressage queen, a hunter/jumper perfectionist, western at heart, or just a girl who loves her horse more than most humans… we’re going to create something that feels like you.
And don’t worry — you don’t have to know how to pose. That’s my job. I will tell you exactly where to put your hands, how to stand, and when to laugh. If your horse decides today is not the day? That’s fine too. I have patience. And snacks. Usually both.
When you book a session with me, it’s not stiff or intimidating. We’re going to laugh. Your horse might try to eat my reflector, or even flowers and leaves. I might make ridiculous sounds to get their ears forward. It’s relaxed and fun — but also intentional. I’ll guide you the whole time. You don’t have to know how to pose. You don’t need the “perfect” horse. You just need your relationship.
Want tall boots, breeches, a riding Jacket? Let’s do it.
Flowy dress at golden hour? Absolutely.
Dramatic black or white background portrait that feels like art? Yes please.
Now let’s talk about the part I care about most — your images shouldn’t live and die on Instagram.
Your horse deserves wall space. Big, beautiful, framed wall space. Albums you can flip through when you’re older and a little teary, or table top art of small framed prints Because, horses don’t stay the same forever. And neither do we.
I serve Charleston and travel to Camden, Aiken, and Tryon, NC; and North Florida (Jacksonville, State. Augustine, and Ocala — because horse country is everywhere and I will happily follow good horses and good light.
If you’ve been thinking, “I should really do photos with my horse someday…”
This is your slightly horse-obsessed photographer telling you: someday is now. 🐎✨
